Minister Dr. Joyce Ross CM

Dr. Ross was born and raised in the community of East Preston to parents Elder Edith Colley and the late James A. Colley.   She was married to the late John Ross and together they had six children.  Dr. Ross was baptized July 1953 at the age of 14, in the East Preston United Baptist Church by Rev. Donald D. Skeir.  Dr. Ross was educated in Partridge River Elementary School and received her grade 12 through Adult Education.  She was excepted in Mount St Vincent University as a mature student taking some courses, then went on to NS Teacher's College where she received her Diploma in Early Child Education, and Graduated in 1976.  She has taken several business and Leadership courses at Dalhousie University and various education facilities in Nova Scotia and abroad. At her retirement age she enrolled at Acadia Divinity College in the Bachelor of Theology program.  Dr. Ross then graduated in 2005 with a Diploma in Prison Ministry and the Christine Foundation Diploma.  She strongly believes that learning is a life long process.

 

Church Activies:

Dr. Ross thought Sunday school for over 56 years, took two years off then returned and loving ever minute of it. She was the past president of the BYPU.  Under her leadership there were 85 young people, the largest group ever in the history of the Church, and was also the AUBA rep. as well as supervisor for the youth.  Dr. Ross was also past Finance Chair and Building fund treasurer of the Church, past CGIT leader and Church Counsel, past President of Ladies Auxiliary and served on many committees of the group.  She was also the past President of AUBA Women's Institute.  Dr. Ross held many offices in that group as Coordinator of Prison Ministry and was appointed a Licentiate on May 30, 1999, and given a Church License to Minister.  She received an AUBA Licence August 2003, and was appointed Minister of outreach Ministry in April, 2011. Dr. Ross served on many communities, Provincial and National Boards and has received the highest award any one can receive in Canada, "The Order of Canada" for outstanding Community work and Leadership skills in 2002.  She also received an honorary doctorate of Law from Dalhousie University In 2002 as well as over 150 honours and awards for work done in and surrounding Communities.

 

Employment History:

Domestic Worker, 1954 -1968 VG Nurses Residence, Community Health Aid, For Black United Front 1969-71 Nurses assistance 1971-1973 Mount St. Vincent Mother House Executive Director of East Preston Day Care Centre 1974-2004 Coordinator of a Pilot project Community Justice Society 2005-2006.

 

Dr. Ross loves to work for the Lord.  She gains her strength from the word of God Psalm 23 and 27 are the ones which give her grate strength and through her faith in God through the power of prayer keep her going from day to day.
